What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
In simple terms Search Engine Optimisation (SEO for short) is the process of improving the visibility of a website in the search results pages. Those that display after you perform a search.
The results pages that displayed are known as SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). When most people talk about Search Engine Optimisation they are referring to optimising for the “Organic Results”. These are also known as the “unpaid” or “natural” search results.
SEO is one part of Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Search Engine Marketing describes a more complete package of activities to increase overall visibility in both the organic AND paid search engine results.
For some local businesses however, it is arguably just as important to optimise for the “Local Results”. This is because these appear above the organic results in the SERPs.
Getting your website displayed on the paid sections of these pages is also very important. We will look at that in more detail in pay per click advertising.
We often get asked – “can you optimise my website for search engines?”. The answer, is yes we can. But please bear in mind that optimising your website is only part of Search Engine Optimisation.
There are other factors (not on your actual website) that will affect where you appear in the SERPs.-
Which Search Engines Should I Optimise For?
The most widely used search engine as you probably already know is Google with approximately 70% of all search traffic. Bing and Yahoo catch the majority of the rest of the search engine traffic.
There are slight differences between how search engines rank you listings but in principal if you optimise for Google you will rank well in the others.
What Are The Key Stages of SEO?
The following are what we consider to be the key stages of Search Engine Optimisation:-
Planning – creating a strategy for your website and your business.
Keyword Research – identify the keywords that you want your website / business to be found for. Optimising your website for the main keywords used in your industry is not always the best first approach. Niche keywords, can result in better results in a shorter period of time.
Audit – a review of your website and your current search engine results for your chosen keywords.
Website Optimisation – this covers several areas which include:-
Text – keyword density, writing style, number of words, sentence length etc.
Images – file size (needs to load quickly), alt tags etc.
Content Marketing – regular output of high quality engaging content drives traffic, leads, customer retention and brand loyalty.
Monitor, Review and Act – successful Search Engine Optimisation is not a one off set of activities, it requires constant care and attention which is why we have developed our online growth packages.
