What is Search Engine Marketing?
In simple terms Search Engine Marketing (SEM for short) is the process of improving the visibility of a website in the search results pages. Those that display after you perform a search. For both unpaid (organic) and paid (advertised) results.
SEM incoporates all the activities used to get your business onto the Search Engine Results Pages (see image). This includes:
Search Engine Optimisation – optimising your website and the rest of your online presence to improve your visibility in the “organic”, “natural”, “unpaid” search results.
Pay Per Click Advertising – getting adverts for your business, products and services showing in the paid adverts section of the SERPS.
Getting “On The Map” – listing your business on Google My Business and the equivalent on other search engines. So your business appears under the map when a specific local search is made (ie. butchers in Grimsby).
Paid Shopping – getting your products showing at the top of the page where appropriate by listing your products in the search engines own shopping channel.
The more visibility you can get in the search engine results pages. The more times you appear. The further up the page you appear. The better your chances of attracting customers.
This is why it is so important to have an integrated Search Marketing approach rather than just relying on either one or the other.
Which search engines should I target?
The most widely used search engine as you probably already know is Google with approximately 70% of all search traffic. Bing and Yahoo catch the majority of the rest of the search engine traffic.
When it comes to Search Engine Optimisation, there are slight differences between how search engines rank your listings. However, in principal if you optimise for Google you will rank well in the others too.
When it comes to paid advertising you have to weigh up the options and your budget:
Google is “the place to be” – but because competition for space is so high, so is the cost per click you will pay.
Bing and Yahoo get much lower traffic volumes than Google BUT you potentially get more bang for your buck.
The most sensible approach is to spread your budget so that you appear on all of the major search engines.
